ColORado's Historic Brewery SINCE 1889

Walter's brewery was established in by 5 brothers in 1889 who immigrated to Wisconsin from Germany.  Each brother open their own name sake brewery in the WIsconsin cities of Eau Claire, Appleton, Menasha, and West Bend as well as moving west to Pueblo and Trinidad, Colorado.  These 5 brothers (Johannes, George, Christian, Matthaus and Martin)  built a brewing dynasty that became the largest group of brewing brothers in the United States.  In 1898, Martin Walter set out for California but stopped in Pueblo, Colorado — and never left.  Seeing a booming steel town, he purchased the Pueblo Brewery for $7,000 and released his first beer, Mountain Dew, on October 15, 1898. Production grew from 45 to 170 barrels per day, and the company supplied beers under dozens of labels across more than 20 states. The brewery survived Colorado's statewide Prohibition in 1916 but closed its doors for good on January 3, 1975 after 77 years as a Pueblo landmark. In the early 2000s, a group of Puebloans partnered with the Walter family to revive the brand using the pre-Prohibition pilsner recipe. Today, Walter's Brewery & Taproom operates at 126 Oneida Street in a historic 1883 train beer depot, specializing in lager beers including the flagship Walter's Original, Pueblo Chile Beer, and Blood Orange Lager.  The Walter Brewing Company's mission is to honor both its Wisconsin roots and Pueblo heritage, brewing quality beers that connect generations of drinkers — from the mill workers of yesterday to the craft beer enthusiasts of today.

A few words from the owner...

I would like to welcome you to our historic brewery in beautiful Southern Colorado, located in Pueblo. Situated in the heart of downtown, our microbrewery is housed in a historic beer depot building adjacent to some of Colorado's historic railroad lines. Yes, they are still active and operational every day, and you can enjoy drinking a beer on our unique patio while watching the trains go by.

Pueblo has incredibly pleasant weather all year round. Walter's is one of the oldest breweries in Colorado, established in 1889, that is in operation today. Surviving Prohibition, Walter's was among only four breweries that made it through the 17-year prohibition from 1916 - 1933, which started four years earlier in our state than in the rest of the U.S. The other notable Colorado breweries to survive Prohibition were Coors and Tivoli Brewing.

Walter's was founded by the Walter family, an immigrant family from Germany who settled in Wisconsin and Colorado bringing their genuine German beer-making traditions and distributed many Walter's beers throughout the country. Together with the Walter family, Walter's beer continues to flourish as the Walter Brewing Company once again in Pueblo, Colorado.

When visiting Pueblo, you will find that it is Colorado's melting pot of diverse cultures, still holding a small historic charm in its architecture and through its surviving small businesses which have been passed down from generation to generation, reflecting both rich cultural roots and old-fashioned Americana. Pueblo is a blended and unique community full of pride, grit, and history.

Be prepared to meet and mingle with the many tastes of Pueblo through our city's diverse cultures when visiting our taproom. Our city started as four towns around 1842 and became one in 1873. It was a bustling steel mill town populated by many immigrants from all over the world, drawn here by ore and the Rockefeller-owned steel mill, which is still in operation today.

From this history, our community is strongly made up of not only a German community, as our brand name suggests, but also Bojon (Slovenian, Yugoslavian, Croatian), Mexican, Irish, Italian, Greek, and more. Our Pueblo brewery founder, Martin Walter, saw this hub of immigrants as the place he wanted to make his namesake brewery home in 1898. Ever since then, just about each Puebloan that you meet has a personal story, memory, or family history with Walter's Brewery, which I am sure they would share with you if you ask them while visiting our taproom.

I've included a bit of my own history with Walter's here in a couple of family photos from each side of my own family. Walter's is truly a part of Pueblo's cherished history.

No matter your ethnicity, religion, political beliefs, whether you're Gen Z, a baby boomer, or whatever floats your boat, EVERYONE is welcome at Walter's, just as they were over 100 years ago.  Thank you for supporting our small business brewery.

With a warm welcome,
