Since 1889
The Walter Brewing Company is a microbrewery located in Pueblo, Colorado that continues the tradition of brewing Walter's Original Pilsner, a Pueblo original since 1889. In the late 1800's 5 Walter brothers who came from Germany to Wisconsin each had their own breweries with one located in Pueblo, Colorado. Once a major-beer brand that had a production to rival Coors, Walter's Beer eventually was being brewed in 6 breweries in the American West and Midwest with over 30 different labels. One of the brothers, Martin Walter, established his brewery in Pueblo and was actually headed west to originally open in California. However, passing through Pueblo by train, he discovered a booming town due in large part to its steel mill, which gave the city of Pueblo the nickname "the steel city of the West." Walter's Brewery survived prohibition and eventually sold in 1974 to an individual who decided he could make more money parting out the brewery and its brands than keeping it open. He closed it in 1975 after nearly 100 years of operation with many Puebloans never knowing what really happened. Walter's is now brewed again on Oneida Street in Pueblo with over 128 years of rich history shown with cherished and sought after antiques & collectibles that reflect Walter's German-American brewing tradition. After nearly 40 years of being just a memory, Walter's is back again in large part through the support of the Walter family of Wisconsin just as it was 128 years ago. Come join us in our tap room at 126 S. Oneida Street and raise a glass to the wonderful history and cherished memories of thousands across the nation that Walter's has meant so much to--it will mean that much to you too!
